Zombie Dice: Quick Play, Quick Fun

Zombie Dice by Steve Jackson Games is a game that’s as brilliantly simple as it is fiendishly fun. Perfect for those evenings when our brains are feeling a bit… zombified, but our hearts are yearning for a dash of thrill.

Zombie Dice comes in this adorable, brain-themed can that’s just begging to be opened. Inside, you’ll find 13 dice, each marked with symbols representing brains, shotgun blasts, and footsteps. These aren’t your average dice; they’re your tools for hunting down those delicious brains. With their playful symbols and cheerful colors, these dice are irresistibly adorable, turning every roll into a moment of joy.

Here’s the gist of how you play: you’re the zombie, and those dice are your unlucky victims. On your turn, you shake the can and draw three dice to roll. Your goal? To collect as many brains as you can without getting shotgunned three times. Brains mean points, and shotgun blasts mean trouble. The footsteps? Those victims are just a bit too speedy, allowing you to re-roll them for another chance at their brains.

Let me walk you through a quick turn to give you a taste: I shake the can and draw my three dice — two greens and a yellow. I roll them and get a brain, a footprint and a shotgun blast. Ekkk! But I’m hungry for more, so I draw two more dice to replace the brains and shotguns, so that I have a total of three dice to roll.

This time, another brain, and a couple of footprints. Do I push my luck further, or do I stop and bank my two delicious brains? That’s the delicious dilemma Zombie Dice serves up every turn. I chose to continue on and press my luck, knowing if I get three shotgun blasts then I am out of the game!

I give the dice a roll and, to my delight, snag two brains but, I also get a shotgun blast. The thought of another blast has me on edge, knowing a third would spell my doom. So, I opt to play it safe, banking my six hard-earned brains and passing the dice to my friend for their chance at glory.

When the dice come back around to me, I managed to clinch victory from the jaws of defeat and am able to win. Winning is a matter of strategy and luck; you play until someone collects 13 brains, then finish the round to see who’s the top zombie. It’s a game that invites laughter and a bit of strategy.

Zombie Dice has quickly shambled its way into my heart as a go-to for quick, hilarious fun that doesn’t require much brainpower — perfect for zombies and tired humans alike. So if you’re in the mood for a game that’s easy to dive into and hard to put down, gather your fellow zombies and let the brain hunt begin. Who knew being undead could be this much fun?

Zombie Dice has become a fast favorite for those times when you want a game that’s simple and swift. It’s the perfect pick-me-up that doesn’t demand too much from your gray matter—ideal for both the zombified and the merely exhausted. If you’re looking for an easy-to-learn, engaging game that’s tough to quit, rally your zombie pals and start the brain chase. Who would have thought that playing undead could be so entertaining?

  1. […] Zombie Dice @ Best Board Shout Outs – I almost feel, and this is not a slight on the author, that this is a bigger, better, and more thoughtful review than this game deserves! That said, and as much distaste as I have for Steve Jackson Games, I don’t dislike Zombie Dice. It’s fine for what it is; a fun, little push-your-luck game that plays well with kids. Good review, this. […]
