The trick is the clock, because the thief is steadily creeping toward escape, so you have to gather enough clues and make your accusation before time runs out.

The joy is watching kids learn real deductive logic without realizing it. They start eliminating suspects, reasoning out who fits the clues, and cheering together when the group nails the thief.
