Dice of Pirates Review: Push-Your-Luck Dice Game with Treasure Collection

Ahoy there, wanderers of whimsy and seekers of strategy! Today, we set sail for a dicey adventure on the high seas with Dice of Pirates, a compact yet thrilling game where players compete to become the most notorious pirate captain. Let me guide you through the setup, the rules, and why this game is a hidden treasure for both landlubbers and veteran pirates alike.

Inside the compact tin, you’ll find eight custom dice adorned with pirate symbols: gold coins, black flags, ships, and crossbones. There’s also a cluster of treasure tokens—glittering booty that every player is dying (or should I say rolling) to collect. The art is charming and evokes the spirit of a Saturday morning pirate adventure. Here are the 4 different types of dice.

The rules of Dice of Pirates are delightfully simple to pick up, but there’s plenty of room for clever strategy to keep things exciting. Here’s how the game unfolds.

Each player begins their adventure with no treasure, an empty ship, and a head full of pirate dreams. The dice are placed in the center of the table, glinting with promise, just waiting to be claimed.

On your turn, you’ll roll all eight dice, and each symbol holds a fate of its own. Roll a Gold Coin, and you’ve struck treasure—hoard these gleaming prizes for points at the end. Land on a Black Flag, and you’ll need to set it aside; collect too many, and you’ll find yourself under attack! If you roll Ships, it’s time to raid, plundering treasure from your fellow players (because what kind of pirate would you be without a little plundering?).

Before doing anything, I neaten my stash. This game is very interactive. The boats are given to an opponent to roll, then they decide your fate before sending the die back to me…argh.

My friend rolled the die and got a gold. They had several choices, but they decided to give me the gold. Because of their generosity, they got a red plunder token. After I got my dice back, I am left with these seven beauties. Do I keep the gold or risk it all and re-roll?

I decided to keep the dice and bank the three gold coins. I was one step closer to be the first player to collect 7 coins and claim the coveted title of the most infamous pirate captain to ever sail the dicey seas. It’s a race to riches, a battle of wits and luck and best of all, we were narrating your every move in our best pirate accent.

The game went on ten minutes later before I got the final gold coin I needed to secure a victory! I had a fun time playing Dice of Pirates! The dice mechanics are fun, the pieces had a nice weight, and the pirate theme is woven into every aspect of the game.

That said, Dice of Pirates is at its best played with a spirited group that’s ready to embrace the chaos. It’s not meant to be a deeply strategic experience, but rather a lighthearted romp where the most daring pirates come out ahead. If you love games like Zombie Dice or King of Tokyo, you’ll feel right at home with this one.
