Every other week, I meet with a group of friends to practice conversational Spanish. Bananagrams Español gave us a really nice way to practice Spanish in this relaxed environment. We were all at different stages in learning Spanish—some of us could whip out full sentences with flair, while others were still mastering the basics. With tiles in hand, we dove into the world of Bananagrams en Español, not just to win, but to practice, to laugh, and to learn together.

In addition to familiar letters, you’ll get special tiles like “Ñ,” double letters like “LL,” along with a couple other types of tiles. Playing Bananagrams Español is as simple as peeling a banana—well, maybe not quite that simple if you’re still learning Spanish, but that’s part of the fun! In our Spanish conversation group, we each started with 21 tiles, leaving the rest in the middle.

Someone shouted “¡Divide!” (the Spanish equivalent of “Split!”), and we flipped our tiles to start building crossword grids with valid Spanish words.I put out the first word, ADIOS. The other players have to build their words off of this.

Jerry decided to build on the tiles and built the word NIÑO. I like how he incorporated one of the Bananagrams Espanol tiles, Ñ, in his play. You can see below that Sarah, our conversational group leader, played SIENTO. These were a couple of the few first plays of the night.

Here are the rest of the rules: When one of us used all our tiles, we’d call out “¡Pela!” (meaning “Peel!”), and everyone would grab one new tile from the pile. If a tricky letter like “Ñ” had us stumped, we could shout “¡Saca!” to swap it out for three new tiles. The game ended when someone finished their grid and yelled “¡Bananas!” to claim victory—after, of course, a thorough group check to make sure all the words were real!

After we played, we were building words just for fun. I feel like the tiles really allowed each of us to contribute at our own level.
