Upwords Board Game Review: Stack the Letters

The first time someone reached across the board and turned my hard won CAT into COAT and then into COATS, stacking letters right on top of my tiles to do it, I made a noise I am not proud of. That was the moment Upwords won me over. It looks like Scrabble had a clever idea in the shower, and the idea was simply, what if you could build upward?

You make words on a grid much like Scrabble, but here you can also place letter tiles directly on top of letters already on the board, transforming existing words into new ones. Turn CAT into COAT into COATS, or stack a single letter to swipe a word out from under an opponent’s careful plan. Scoring rewards both the words you make and how high you stack, so a tall, clever play can outscore a long flat one, and the board grows a little more crowded and three dimensional every turn.

What I love is how the stacking opens up moves that flat word games simply cannot reach. You are not just hunting for open space, you are reshaping what is already there, reaching over and rewriting the board. It keeps the game lively even when the grid fills up, because there is always another layer waiting to be played.

It is friendly, familiar enough that any Scrabble fan picks it up instantly, and a touch fresher thanks to that vertical wrinkle. The chunky stackable tiles feel wonderful in the hand, and a game moves along briskly. For word lovers who want their classic genre with a twist, this is a genuinely smart spin.
