Gelatinous Review: A Simple Dice-Rolling Party Game Where You Build a Cube

In the enchanting realm where board games and fairy tales intertwine, I had the sheer delight of encountering Gelatinous by the illustrious Steve Jackson Games. This is the perfect game as a party is winding down and people are focusing on things other than strategy, but still want to enjoy the company of their friends.

To play, each player has a coaster-sized board, with seven translucent green and glittery dice.  The dice looks Gelatinous.   We dive into a game that’s perfect as the evening winds down. The ritual begins with a roll of all our dice.

3s are promptly placed on the board, aspiring to fill a 2x2x2 grid, while 1s  journey to the person to the left and 6s travel to the player on the right.

Next, we roll again, this time with our previous twos, fours, and fives, along with the new dice from our neighbors, weaving strategy and chance.  The game reaches its crescendo when someone completes their 2x2x2 Gelatinous cube. In my experience, this takes about three to six turns.

In the quiet wait for dinner or when you need to step away from life’s complexities, Gelatinous serves as a charming getaway, simplicity, and most importantly FUN.

  1. This is my favorite Steve Jackson game. We play with lots of variations. My favorite is if we roll a 5, we can pass the dice to anyone at the table.
