Jaipur: A Vibrant Voyage Through the Marketplaces of India

I’m excited to share with you the enchanting world of Jaipur, a delightful two-player game that has captured my heart. Just like the vibrant markets of Catan, Jaipur offers a bustling bazaar experience where strategy and luck dance together in perfect harmony.

In Jaipur, each player takes on the role of a trader in the bustling markets of the Indian city, Jaipur. Your goal is to become the Maharaja’s personal trader by amassing more wealth than your opponent over two or three rounds. Shuffle the goods and camel cards together and deal five cards to each player.

On your turn, you can either take cards or sell cards. You can take one good card from the market or take all the camel cards. Alternatively, you can exchange any number of cards from your hand with the market, provided you use camels or other goods in the trade.

To sell, you discard goods cards from your hand and take the corresponding number of tokens from the stack. The more cards you sell at once, the higher your reward.

Camels don’t go into your hand; instead, they form a separate herd. They are crucial for trading multiple cards at once and for end-game scoring. For selling three, four, or five cards of the same type at once, you earn bonus tokens. These tokens can provide substantial extra points.

Each type of good (diamonds, gold, silver, cloth, spices, and leather) has its own stack of tokens, with higher value tokens at the top. The sooner you sell, the higher the reward.

The round ends when three types of goods tokens are depleted or when the draw pile is empty. Players count their tokens’ value and include any bonus points from their herds of camels. The player with the highest total wins the round, and a seal of excellence is awarded. The game continues until one player has won two seals of excellence.

Place three camel cards face-up in the center of the market, then draw two more cards from the deck to join them. The remaining cards form the draw pile.

The artwork is stunning, with rich, vibrant colors that draw you into the bustling markets of Jaipur. The tokens and cards are of high quality, making the game a tactile joy to play. The gameplay is elegant yet strategic, offering layers of depth as you decide when to trade, sell, or hold out for better opportunities. The balance between luck and strategy keeps each game fresh and exciting. I used an older version of the game, so it looks different than the newer version.
