Last night, I opened up Cat in the Box with a couple of friends, and I have to say that I absolutely loved the pieces that tumbled out of that small, colorful box. There’s something about cats and quantum theory that just fits, doesn’t it?

Inside, we found a stack of sleek cards, each with just a number and a stylish black face. That’s right, no suits, no red or blue or green, just numbers 1 through 9.

The box also included a central board with a grid to track played cards, colored tokens for each player, and a player board where we marked our “declared” suits. Everything is clean, crisp, and oddly elegant. Even the insert made me smile.

This is a trick-taking game, but with a twist that made our brains stretch in the best way. Each card you play doesn’t have a suit until you declare one when you play it. That means your red 7 only becomes a red 7 when you say it is. Everyone takes turns playing one card per trick, and you must follow suit, based on what you’ve declared.
The central grid board has spaces for each combination of number and color, and once someone plays a card as, say, a green 5, no one else can play that combo for the rest of the round.

Your personal player board tracks your predictions about how many tricks you think you’ll win, and bonus points come from forming connected paths of declared suits on your board. Oh, check out the cards with equations on the back. This game has equations and cats everywhere, reminding me constantly that I did not pay attention as much as I should have in science class.

Cat in the Box blends logic with bluffing, timing, and a healthy dose of chaos. It is like Schrödinger himself shuffled the deck. I loved how the game made us question our own intentions, not just what cards we had, but what we wanted them to be.

The table talk it encouraged was fantastic. We were joking, second-guessing, and trying to outwit each other all while sharing snacks and stories. Isn’t that what game night is really about?
