A Solo Journey Through Middle-earth, One Chapter at a Time

Something magical has taken root in my heart, and I’m ready to follow it down the winding paths of Middle-earth. After just one breathtaking play of The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring Trick-Taking Game, I knew. I knew. This wasn’t going to be a “once and done” kind of experience. Over the next couple of months, I’ll be playing through all 18 chapters of the game—solo. Just me, a handful of cards, and the weight of an epic quest to carry through forests, mountains, and shadowy ruins.

Yes, it’s designed for cooperative play, and yes, it’s meant to be a shared puzzle… but what is a solo game if not a quiet conversation with the story itself?

Each chapter will get its moment in the sun (or moonlight, depending on when I’m playing). I’ll follow Frodo and the Fellowship from Bag End to the breaking point, testing my own wit and willpower with every card laid down. There will be laughter. There will be muttered “no-no-no” moments when the Ring tempts a bad play. And if I know myself, there will be tea and playlists and far too many feelings.

Along the way, I’ll be journaling my progress and sharing my thoughts on each chapter’s unique challenge

I think a lot of us carry stories around with us, stories that matter deeply, even if no one else is watching. This feels like one of those. This solo journey isn’t about proving I can win—it’s about walking beside the Fellowship in my own quiet way. The weight of the Ring, the hush of the woods, the chill of the mines—I’ll try to feel it all. And I’ll take you with me, one blog post at a time.

Will I succeed in all 18 chapters? Who knows. Will I sleeve the cards before I even deal chapter one? Absolutely. The paper is delicate, and this journey deserves care.

If you’ve ever thought, “I don’t know if I can play something epic solo,” I invite you to join me. Or cheer from the sidelines. Or grab your own copy and meet me at the riverbank, hearts full of hope. The road goes ever on—and I’m stepping onto it, one trick at a time.
