Oh, friends, I just played Anomia, and I don’t think I’ve laughed that hard in weeks. It’s the kind of game that scrambles your brain in the best way possible. You sit down thinking you’re clever and composed, and ten minutes later you’re shouting “Sci-Fi Movie!” across the table while everyone else is gasping from laughter and surprise.

Anomia is all about the beautiful chaos that happens when your brain short-circuits under pressure. The premise is simple enough: every player has a pile of cards, and on each card is a symbol and a category.

On your turn, you flip the top card from your pile and place it face up in front of you. If your symbol matches someone else’s, you have to face off immediately. No time to think. The first person to blurt out a correct answer for the other player’s category wins their opponent’s face-up card.

And that’s when it happens. That moment when your brain decides it has absolutely nothing to offer. You’re staring at someone’s card that says “Type of Tree,” and all you can think of is “…grass?” Meanwhile, the other person yells “Maple!” and snatches your card before you can even form a second thought. It’s fast, it’s frantic, and it’s absolutely hilarious.

My favorite moment of the night was when three players faced off and completely froze. They just sat there blinking at each other like they’d never heard of capes before. And then, seconds later, a new match popped up and someone had to name a pizza topping. I’ve never heard “pineapple” yelled so triumphantly.

Sometimes there’s a cascade too, where winning a card (and removing it from play) reveals a previously covered card, creating a new symbol match and triggering another challenge instantly. That happened twice in a row during our game and I swear we were all on the floor laughing by the end of it. The panic is contagious, but in the best way.

Anomia is one of those magical little games that takes almost no time to learn but leaves you wide-eyed and breathless by the end. It’s perfect for family night, game night, or any moment that could use a little brain-bending silliness. Just be warned—your ability to recall everyday things may disappear the moment the spotlight hits. The cards won are collected as points, and the player with the most cards at the end of the game wins.
