There are quiet nights around the board game table, and then there are nights when your entire personality is called into question because someone dared you to name six video game sidekicks on the spot. Enter GeekOut!, the gloriously unhinged trivia game where your only real weapon is everything you’ve ever geeked out about in your life.

I sat down to play it with a few dear friends who, let’s just say, know their dragons from their droids. The box itself is deceptively simple. A die. A stack of cards. And yet, by the end of the evening, we were howling with laughter, defending the honor of obscure characters, and applauding each other’s memory vaults like we were on stage at a pop culture spelling bee. Below are a few examples of the cards.

Each turn begins with a category—rolled like a spell from the die—and a prompt that will test your mental shelves. Think “Name 2 insect invasion films” or “Name 2 female fantasy authors.” Seems manageable, right? But then it begins. “I can name 3,” someone says. “Well, I can name 4,” another replies. And suddenly, it’s not about the original number at all. It’s about how far you’re willing to go to prove your nerd credentials… and whether or not your brain is ready to follow you there.

One of my favorite moments of the night was when I very confidently claimed I could name “5 fictional comic book schools”. My mouth had already moved before my mind caught up. But by some miracle, my inner librarian stepped up, and I squeaked past the challenge… barely.

If you’re looking for a game that’s part trivia, part bluff, and entirely fueled by pure, delightful geekery, GeekOut! is a gem. Just be warned: the next time someone casually mentions cartoons from the 90s, you might find yourself saying, “I can name five,” without thinking—and suddenly, the room is silent, and it’s your turn to shine.
