The Ricks Must Be Crazy Review – Engine-Building Strategy Game with Energy Management

From the moment I opened The Ricks Must Be Crazy, I knew we were in for something ridiculous. The artwork captures that signature Rick and Morty aesthetic, filled with neon chaos, strange tech, and a sense that things are about to go horribly, hilariously wrong.

Inside, we found a stack of Power Cards, a handful of unique Character Cards featuring various versions of Rick, Morty, and the rest of the gang, and an intricate system of Zone Tiles that formed the foundation of our interdimensional empire.

Of course, there were also Energy Tokens, because what’s a Rick and Morty game without harnessing some dangerously unstable power?

To setup we arranged the four Zone Tiles in a vertical stack, representing different dimensions layered on top of one another, from the highest-tech realms down to the lowest, most inefficient backwater energy sources.

Each player chose a Character Card, gaining special abilities that could be used strategically throughout the game. With Power Cards shuffled and Energy Tokens at the ready, we prepared for the madness to unfold.

The game is all about generating, stealing, and utilizing Energy in the most Rick Sanchez-approved way possible. Players take turns activating bizarre inventions, gathering Energy, and using it to power up gadgets that help control the different dimensions.

Each zone provides a different amount of Energy per turn, but the trick is positioning yourself correctly to leech power efficiently while also denying it to your opponents. Naturally, the game encourages plenty of sabotage, forcing players to mess with each other’s plans in the most irritatingly effective ways.

Each round, players deploy their characters to different dimensions, deciding whether they want to play it safe in a low-risk, low-reward zone or gamble everything in a high-energy, high-stakes realm. Once characters are placed, the Energy flows downward from the highest dimension to the lowest, and this is where the real strategy comes in—because only the players who are positioned properly can grab the most power before it trickles away. After collecting Energy, it’s time to activate Inventions, play special Power Cards, and unleash whatever shenanigans will ensure your dominance over the Energy flow.

It didn’t take long for our game to devolve into pure, interdimensional anarchy. One moment, I was basking in the glow of my perfectly crafted energy-harvesting plan; the next, a so-called “friend” used a Power Card to block my entire operation, leaving me scrambling for scraps in the lowest dimension. Betrayals were frequent, strategies were thrown into chaos, and somehow, amidst the wreckage of everyone’s plans, we couldn’t stop laughing.

What makes The Ricks Must Be Crazy such a delight is how it perfectly captures the feel of the Rick and Morty universe. The game thrives on unpredictability, where even the best-laid plans can be shattered in an instant by a well-played card or an unexpected twist in Energy flow. The details of this game are astounding, even the backs of the cards and tokens are decorated.

But beneath the madness, there’s a solid engine-building strategy game that rewards clever positioning, resource management, and a willingness to embrace the absurd.
