Munchkin Cthulhu Review – Competitive Card Game with Lovecraft Theme

Prepare yourselves for a descent into madness—Munchkin madness, that is! Munchkin Cthulhu takes the classic monster-slaying, treasure-grabbing fun of the Munchkin series and plunges it headfirst into the eerie, tentacle-filled world of H.P. Lovecraft’s Cthulhu Mythos. It’s a game that blends cosmic horror with absurd humor, proving that even eldritch abominations can’t resist a good laugh.

This version of Munchkin is a love letter to fans of Lovecraftian horror, parodying everything from terrifying monstrosities to ancient tomes of forbidden knowledge. The familiar Munchkin illustrations and mechanics are here—you’ll level up, defeat monsters, collect treasures, and sabotage your friends—but with a thematic twist. The madness of the Mythos comes alive with cults, tentacles, and unspeakable horrors that will leave you laughing in disbelief. You can choose from four classes in Munchkin Cthulhu: Cultist, Monster Whacker, Professor, and Investigator.

In this version, you might find yourself joining cults like the Cult of Tentacles or the Cult of Dagon, gaining bizarre powers (and drawbacks) as you descend deeper into insanity. The treasures you collect are equally hilarious—there’s no shortage of tentacles here.

Here are some of my niece’s favorite treasure cards. These sparked endless laughter and debates about their hilarity and usefulness. Which one would be your favorite?

  • Shogulator: This two-handed contraption is a powerhouse against anything ending in “-goth.” It adds a +10 bonus against Shoggoths or Shog Goths, and still provides a +2 bonus otherwise. As chaotic as its name suggests, it’s a lifesaver in combat.\
  • Piercing Shriek: A one-time-use card that lets out a scream so impactful it can swing the tide of battle with a +2 bonus to either side. The chaos doesn’t stop there—if the player to your left has a lower level, they get to pick it up and shriek later, keeping the madness alive.
  • Fez of Fazooli: This stylish headgear adds a +3 bonus to your character unless you’re a Monster Whacker. With tentacles sprouting from the top, it’s the perfect blend of utility and eldritch fashion.
  • Fake Tentacle: This hilarious headgear grants a +1 bonus to Run Away, fooling monsters with its slimy, tentacle-like charm. Just don’t lose it—it vanishes with any effect that takes away your headgear, proving it’s only as real as the laughs it brings.

What makes Munchkin Cthulhu truly special is how it balances the eerie atmosphere of Lovecraft’s stories with the over-the-top humor that Munchkin fans adore. It’s the kind of game where you can wield the Chainsaw of Bloody Dismemberment, join a tentacle-worshiping cult, and defeat an Unspeakably Awful Horror—all while laughing until your sides hurt.

The game’s clever parody of the Cthulhu Mythos makes it accessible even to players who aren’t hardcore Lovecraft fans. Meanwhile, the insane mechanics and thematic twists keep the gameplay fresh for seasoned Munchkin veterans.

Whether you’re battling Ozathoth or sabotaging your friends with a well-timed curse, every moment of Munchkin Cthulhu is a delightful descent into absurdity. These were just a few cards my niece played during the game, and they made for some unforgettable moments.

So gather your friends, shuffle the deck, and prepare to face the madness with a smile on your face. Just remember: in the world of Munchkin Cthulhu, the only thing scarier than the monsters is your friends’ betrayal. Happy gaming!
