Skip-Bo Card Game Review: A Timeless Sequential Building Classic for Families

Skip-Bo is simple yet versatile, with a deck containing 162 cards made up of number cards and wild cards. The number cards make up the majority of the deck, with each number appearing multiple times in vibrant colors ranging from 1 to 12. The wild cards can stand in for any number and add a layer of strategic play. I am using an older version of the game because that is what my friend wanted to share a special game from her childhood.

The goal of Skip-Bo is straightforward: to be the first to play all the cards from your personal stockpile by building sequential stacks from 1 to 12. First, we shuffled the deck and dealt 30 cards to each player since there were only two of us. Only the top card of each stockpile was visible. My friend played the SkipBo card and the next card I put down is the 2 card.

Then, we placed the remaining cards in a draw pile, and each player set up to four personal discard piles to manage during their turns. Next we managed to put down a 1 card.

In the center, space was reserved for the build piles, where players created stacks in numerical order from 1 to 12. You can see my personal discard piles below.

They used these cards, along with the top cards from their discard piles or stockpile, to build stacks in numerical order on the build piles. The wile Skip-Bo cards could be played as any number, making them invaluable for keeping the sequence moving. If players couldn’t play all their cards, they placed leftovers into their personal discard piles, arranging them strategically for future turns. Each turn ended with players discarding one card from their hand, setting the stage for the next round.

The game continued until one player successfully emptied their stockpile, claiming victory and earning the title of Skip-Bo champion. Collecting piles of 12 cards is one of the main goals.

For an evening of lighthearted competition, shared laughter, and just the right amount of challenge, Skip-Bo is a timeless classic worth revisiting. Whether you’re teaching it to new players or sparking nostalgia for those who’ve played before, this game is a winner.
