Let me tell you about a game that had me laughing, scrambling, and—quite literally—peeling! It all began when a dear friend pulled out a small yellow pouch shaped like a banana and announced, “We’re playing Bananagrams!”

Bananagrams is a word-building game that comes packed in an adorable banana-shaped bag—yes, the aesthetic alone had me sold! Inside are 144 letter tiles, each one a little gem waiting to be turned into words. The premise is delightfully simple: each player races to create their own crossword grid using the tiles they draw.

Each player starts with a certain number of tiles, depending on the number of players. For example, with 2-4 players, you each draw 21 tiles. When someone yells “Split!”, everyone flips their tiles over and starts arranging them into words in a grid format. If you use up all your tiles, you shout “Peel!” and everyone takes one new tile from the center pile. You can “Dump” it back into the center pile, but there’s a cost—you must draw three new tiles as a penalty!
The game ends when there are fewer tiles in the center than there are players, and someone successfully uses all their tiles in a proper crossword grid, shouting Bananas!

Bananagrams is, quite simply, a delight. It’s fast-paced, accessible, and endlessly replayable, perfect for both wordsmiths and those just looking for a good time. The lack of a rigid score system makes it feel playful and low-stakes, yet the challenge of crafting words from chaos is immensely satisfying. Whether you’re a lover of words or just someone seeking a laugh-filled evening with friends, this game is sure to add a spark of whimsy to your tabletop adventures.
