Brainwaves: The Wise Whale is a game where you match sea creatures to their locations. It is a delightful test of memory and attention, made even more fun by the whimsical undersea theme. Each round brought a gentle thrill as we tried to recall where our finned and tentacled friends were swimming. The game is light and engaging, perfect for a quick and fun challenge, but also rewarding as a memory workout.

The game comes with 72 Sea Creature Cards, with various sea animals, a pad of paper to score and a game dice that is used with some variations of the game. To play, we laid out a 3×3 grid of location tiles face-up in the center of the table, creating the environment where the sea creatures would be placed. Next, we shuffled the sea creature cards and placed one next to each location tile, forming a pair of sea creature and habitat. In the game we played, we matched with background color. After a few moments to study the grid, we flipped the sea creature cards face-down—the memory challenge had begun!

Brainwaves: The Wise Whale is all about memory and observation. The goal is to remember where each sea creature is hiding and then correctly match them to their locations. On each turn, the active player draws a new sea creature card from the deck. Their task is to identify the correct location on the 3×3 grid where they believe the matching sea creature is swimming. Once they’ve guessed, they flip the corresponding face-down card to check their answer. If the player correctly identifies the sea creature’s location, they remove the card from the grid, score a point, and continue with the next round. If the green turtle is the card that needs to be matched, the two below would be considered matches. It either needs to match the color or the animal.

If they guess incorrectly, the card is returned face-down, and it’s the next player’s turn. Memory is key here, as paying attention to previous flips gives you a better chance at succeeding when it’s your turn again. The below cards are examples of cards that didn’t match since the color and the animal don’t match.

What I adored most was the ease of play, since there are no complicated rules, just a pure focus on memory, laughter, and a little friendly competition. Whether you’re playing with children or adults, this game offers something special for everyone. It’s a wonderful way to keep the brain sharp while swimming through a sea of fun looking for matches.
