A while ago, I played Mysterium with two dear friends. Imagine a game that marries the intrigue of a whodunit with the silent communication of spirits, all set within the hauntingly beautiful walls of a manor where the past whispers secrets waiting to be uncovered.

One player takes on the ethereal role of the ghost, while the others become psychic detectives, each tuned into the spectral frequencies in their quest to solve a lingering mystery. The psychic detectives must interpret these visions, making guesses and slowly narrowing down the possibilities until the final round.

Here, in a climactic convergence of spirit and intuition, the ghost reveals one last set of visions aimed at leading the psychics to the true culprit. Success hinges on the detectives’ ability to correctly interpret the ghost’s final message. All of the psychics correctly chose the victim, the location of the murder and the weapon based on the three clue cards the ghost.

Playing Mysterium with just a trio was an intimate dance of minds and spirits, a delicate balance of giving and interpreting clues shrouded in the ghost’s silence. It’s a game that celebrates the unsaid, the abstract, and the power of perception, wrapping players in a cocoon of suspense and collaborative discovery. I liked it a bit more than playing with more players.
