I’m delighted to dive into the mystical realms of Dominion: Alchemy, a digital expansion I recently explored on Steam. This enchanting addition to the classic deck-building game Dominion introduces a splash of magic and mystery with a focus on potions and alchemical themes. Let’s take a closer look at this digital version and some of its unique cards that can transform your strategic approach.
Dominion: Alchemy on Steam breathes new life into the familiar deck-building dynamics of Dominion with a magical twist. This expansion is beautifully integrated into the digital platform, offering seamless gameplay and intuitive controls that make managing your growing deck a breeze. The alchemy theme is woven through each card and mechanic, enhancing the game with both thematic depth and strategic complexity. Here are the cards in my game.

In this expansion, potions are a new type of currency alongside the traditional gold. These potions unlock powerful actions and effects that can drastically influence the game’s outcome. The digital interface on Steam makes tracking your potion resources and card effects straightforward, ensuring that both new players and seasoned tacticians can focus on crafting their winning strategy. Here are some of the cards in the deck:

The Alchemist card allows you to keep a valuable action card in rotation. When you play the Alchemist, if you have a potion in play, you may place the Alchemist on top of your deck at the end of your turn, ensuring its use in the next round.
The Apothecary card lets you look at the top four cards of your deck, and then you can put them back in any order. Plus, it allows you to draw a card and add any revealed coppers and potions to your hand, providing excellent deck management capabilities.
The Philosopher’s Stone adds a unique scoring mechanism to the game. The Philosopher’s Stone is worth 1 coin for every 5 cards in your deck and discard pile when you play it, making it potentially very valuable in larger decks.

Here are a few more cards in the Alchemy expansion:
The Transmute card is part of the potent trifecta that includes action, victory, and treasure. When played, Transmute allows you to trash a card from your hand. If the trashed card is an action, you gain a Duchy; if it’s a treasure, you gain a Transmute; and if it’s a victory card, you gain a Gold.
The University card adds two actions to your turn and it also allows you to gain an action card costing up to 5 coins when you play it. This opens up strategic avenues for building powerful combinations and expanding your capabilities each turn.
The Familiar card allows you to draw a card and add two actions to your turn, keeping your hand full and your options open. When played, each other player gains a Curse card whenever the Familiar is played.
Possession is one of the most controversial and powerful cards in Dominion: Alchemy, Possession allows you to control another player’s turn. During their turn, any cards they buy are gained by you instead, which can turn the tide of the game dramatically.
Dominion: Alchemy on Steam is a spellbinding experience that mixes the strategic depth of deck-building with the whimsical charm of alchemical magic. Whether you’re a longtime fan of Dominion or new to the series, this digital expansion offers a fresh and engaging way to enjoy the game. The unique alchemical cards bring new strategies and challenges that will surely enchant and engage any player looking to add a little magic to their game night.
