Coup

Coup is a card game, crafted for 2 to 6 players, thrives on the art of bluffing and strategic elimination of opponents. Each player starts with two coins and two influence cards (face-down character cards). The deck consists of five different characters: Duke, Assassin, Captain, Ambassador, and Contessa, each offering unique actions.

On your turn, you can take one action. You take the ability of any character, whether you have that character or not. This is where bluffing becomes key. The last player with at least one influence card remaining wins. Here is what you can do with the different characters:

  • Duke: Take three coins from the treasury.
  • Assassin: Pay three coins to attempt to assassinate another player’s character.
  • Captain: Steal two coins from another player.
  • Ambassador: Exchange cards with the court deck.
  • Contessa: Blocks an assassination attempt.

If you believe a player does not have the character they claim to be using, you can challenge them. A failed challenge means the challenger loses an influence, while a successful challenge means the challenged player loses an influence. When you have seven or more coins, you must launch a coup on your turn, costing you seven coins and forcing another player to lose an influence.

Playing Coup is like participating in a lively court intrigue, where each whispered conspiracy could either elevate you to the heights of power or send you spiraling into the abyss of defeat. The game’s pace and compact size make it a perfect companion for any gathering that thrives on laughter, strategic thought, and the occasional dramatic unmasking.
