Dixit Review: A Beautiful Storytelling Card Game Where Imagination Wins

Dixit, a game of whimsy and wonder, invites players into a world where imagination reigns supreme. Let’s delve into the enchanting components and gameplay mechanics of Dixit, and I’ll share a bit of its magic through my eyes. Here is the game board when I played with three of my friends.

Dixit features a deck of cards, each adorned with surreal and beautifully intricate illustrations that spark the imagination. No two cards are alike, each a canvas for storytelling, filled with elements that can be interpreted in myriad ways depending on the storyteller’s perspective.

Each player starts with six cards in hand. The game plays best with three to six players. On a turn, one player takes on the role of the Storyteller. This player selects one of their cards and says a sentence, phrase, or word that describes the card, but not too obviously.

After hearing the clue, other players choose one of their own cards that best matches the Storyteller’s description and submit it face down. The Storyteller shuffles all received cards and reveals them. Players then vote on which card they believe was the Storyteller’s, but cannot vote for their own card. Here are my voting tokens.

Points are awarded based on the votes. If everyone or no one finds the correct card, the Storyteller scores zero, and other players score points. Otherwise, both the Storyteller and whoever guessed correctly score points. After each turn, the players draw back up to six cards.

The above cards are examples of some beautiful cards in the game. For those who cherish art, storytelling, or just a moment of connection with friends and family, Dixit offers a beautiful escape. It’s not just a game but an experience, one that lingers like the memory of a favorite dream long after the cards are put away.
