I played Battleship this weekend. It was a voyage back to the simple joys of childhood. In this classic game of naval warfare, each of us becomes an admiral, our mission concealed within the silent depths of the ocean—or in this case, the hidden realms of our game boards.

Battleship is as straightforward as it is cunning. Each player arranges their fleet of ships on a grid, the positions of these vessels known only to themselves. Turn by turn, we call out coordinates hoping to strike a hit on our opponent’s hidden ships. A hit marks a beginning, a trail to follow, as we attempt to sink each vessel, piece by piece, while our own fleets remain shrouded in mystery, their safety hanging on our opponent’s next guess.

You’ll see a tale of the sea in the photo above from the lower half of the board. When the winds of fortune carry my opponent’s guesses true, and they strike upon the hidden sanctuaries of my ships. A white marker adorns the grid, a lighthouse for the missed opportunities, and a red means a hit. In our latest voyage, we braved the waters with four ships, a choice that stirred the depths with added layers of challenge and intrigue, making each guess a deeper plunge into the unknown.

The photo above captures a moment frozen in the tides of our game—my guesses, scattered like stars in the night sky. As I danced around the board guessing, looking for my adversary’s fleet. Each guess thereafter a determined step to encircle and sink the battleship, a testament to our dance of minds and the thrilling pursuit of victory hidden in the waves.
